This was great. I know it’s more time-intensive for you guys, but I really love these long-form conversations, tying in all sorts of educational/historical info.
Great episode and concept. How about one or a series fighting shotgun episodes at some point? Of course after all the great fuightjng handgun episodes.
I was 23 years old in 1989 and had grown up reading Skeeter Skelton, Elmer Keith and all of the other usual suspects. Ross Seyfried was as cool as the underside of the pillow in the 80’s and just one hell of a gun writer. Thanks to both of you guys and Jason from Lipseys for getting this done for serious revolver folk. I have the 686 Mountain Gun on order and picked up a 432UC for my wife about 3 days ago.
Not sure Bryan’s load but I’ve all but settled on one 44 Special load for my use. A 250gr Keith SWC with 8 grains of Power Pistol is the best load I’ve tried and I’ve probably loaded more 44 Special than anything else over the years. It runs 950 fps out of 4” barrels and up to 1025 fps out of some tight cylinder gap 5.5” guns. Crazy accurate and best of all under 15.5K PSI which is SAAMI max for the cartridge. Brian Pearce made this load famous years ago and it just plain works.
Thanks for the good, detailed conversation guys. I really enjoyed this along with your other videos, especially in the sharing of the details of the whos and whys behind the different guns. I have no idea how I’d come up to speed similarly outside of going out and just doing a bunch of reading up, which just isn’t going to happen at this time in life.
The clarity of this video seemed a bit rough on this one though compared to others. Did you have to go down in clarify a bit to control the file size for uploading and handling? Fortunately it seemed to work okay for what was presented, but more clarity could be needed if you’re trying to show off a bunch of fine details.
You two make an excellent point regarding fighting each other over 624s when this is available, AND with better grips and front sight.
The insider talk is always good, such as the Stocking Dealer programs. I do kind of feel that the Stocking Dealer program hurt the small to medium gun shops as much or more than the kitchen table FFLs. New S&Ws were pretty hard to find in most backroads or hole in the wall shops.
I love the Brian Pearce load with Power Pistol in my .44 Spls (not for my Bulldog). Now with Alliant powders being unobtainable I’m going to try the WSF load (again, not in the Bulldog!).
Bryan: I’ve got a 625-5 Mountain gun, post-MIM, pre-hole, and I’d also like your your 245-grain in .44 mag brass load. I’ve got about 1,500 pieces of Starline brass and 500 of the bullets already cast and lubed. Thanks for all you guys do.
Thank you for the deep dive into all things Mountain Revolver. A devoted reader of everything Seyfried, I ordered mine as soon as my FFL could find one. Learned very quickly that full power magnum were quite the stingy handful so most of its life I’ve fed it a Special equivalent – 240 SWC @ 875 fps, which is pleasant to shoot and turns whitetails into venison very neatly. Mine came with a conventional cylinder latch and when the single action notch gave way it came back to me with a case colored hammer…
Great first episode! Love the revolver content and also glad to hear you guys adding things in addition to wheel guns. Will the podcast be on Spotify at any point?
A little over a year ago I traded into a M29-8 Mountain Gun. My specimen is a 4-screw production run, not one of the 2 limited runs. It did have a lock in it when I got. It is a shooter and constant companion when in the woods. I have had more than a few arguments over whether or not S&W made a blued Mountain Gun model, usually ends when I place mine into their hands, usually.
I am excited about the release of the Mountain gun and foresee a 629 MG coming to roost. I just hope S&W continues the line and expand into more caliber offerings. I am no longer a poor firefighter raising a family and can afford a few new revolvers.
If a guy loves 4″ N frames and the .41 Magnum, but hates the current prices for nice used big-bore Smiths. . . any chance that guy might be happy in a year or so because the Mountain Gun expands to include a .41? Asking for a friend.

Alright Bryan… I gotta ask, what are the details on that load data for that 245gr 44 Special you talked on.
Check your email
I’d like a piece of that action as well please. 😀
Emailed it
Received, much obliged!
Hi DB, BrYan:
Great episode and concept. How about one or a series fighting shotgun episodes at some point? Of course after all the great fuightjng handgun episodes.
Stay tuned
Any chance HDC makes a light 44 mag load(s)? Also, really hope they make a 625MG in 45 colt
The 44 Load is pretty spicy. But I’ll twist his arm a bit and see.

Thank you Raymond. Ross is a friend and I am planning on a trip to visit him later this year and film some stuff on guns and his exploits.
Please convey to Mr.Seyfried that his writings are missed.
May I have the load data as well? Time to reload for my 629 Camfor.

Thank you sir. I have been using Denny Reichard’s load of 9gr Unique for years. I will give yours a try.

Mine is a 44 Mag case with 9.5gr WSF and a 240/245 Keith.
If the podcast is expanding to non revolver guns I’d like to request a 12 gauge shotgun podcast!
Yes it is!

Just got done watching the Podcast. Great discussion guys. Loved it. This is why I joined AFR.
Hmmmm….do I need a no-lock 629 Mountain? I have both a 625 (Colt) and 629 Mountain, but both with Hillary holes. Gonna have to give this some thought
Keep bringing the great content DB&Y

Excellent. I listened while on the road. Another adventure started. Keep the the good work!
Very pleased with the first longform video podcast. Looking forward to many more.
Great episode guys, thank you.
